STEP 1:
For the caramel, make homemade salted caramel sauce. Heat sugar and water in a saucepan. Remove every couple minutes and swirl.

Remove from heat as it changes to amber color. Stir in butter and whisk. Stir in heavy cream and salt. Set aside to cool.

STEP 3:
For the crust, prepare the buttermilk pie crust using the linked instructions. Roll it out and press into a shallow 9 inch pie dish.

STEP 4:
Trim the edges and refrigerate for 30 min. Place parchment paper on top and fill with pie weights. Bake on the bottom rack at 350F for 20 min.

For the filling, mix the caramel sauce, brown sugar, eggs, butter and vanilla until they're smooth. Add pecans and toss.

Pour the filling over the par-baked crust and return to the oven for 30 min. Remove and cover the edges with foil to prevent burning.

Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature. Top with salted caramel sauce and sea salt flakes.
